Indira Goswami suffers cerebral stroke

Guwahati, Sept 13: Jnanpith awardee and peace talks facilitator in the Northeast, Indira Raisom Goswami suffered a mild cerebral stroke and has been admitted to a local nursing home.

Doctors attending on her said she was in the intensive care unit and was now stable.

"Her condition is being constantly monitored. She is recovering now and talking to doctors and family members. Certain tests will be conducted on her today," they said.

The 65-year-old writer had complained of uneasiness earlier and had been taken to another private nursing home last night from where she was referred to the nursing home specialising in treating cerebral and neurological ailments.

Goswami has been in the news for initiating a dialogue between the banned ULFA and the government which led to the formation of Peoples' Consultative Group (PCG).

The PCG had held three rounds of talks with the Centre in which Goswami was present but later the negotiations ran into rough weather with the PCG withdrawing from the talks.

She joined the Nagarik Shanti Mancha, a forum of intellectuals, to initiate peace talks in the state but she resigned from it last week, as she wanted to work more actively to resume peace parleys through the PCG. (Agencies)
